Putnam County Civil War Monument Re-dedication

July 1, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Rededication of Forest Hill Cemetery Civil War Monument
When: Sun, July 1, 2pm – 3pm
Where: Forest Hill Cemetery, 2181 South County Road 50 West, Greencastle, 46135
Please help celebrate the rehabilitation of the Civil War Monument at Forest Hill Cemetery, following the efforts by our Heritage Preservation Society and President Phil Gick. The Civil War Monument at Forest Hill was the third such statue erected in Indiana and was dedicated five years after the war ended. It was the first Civil War monument in Indiana to feature a human figure. Sculpted by Thomas David Jones, the monument was titled “Western Soldier on Guard.” It was formally dedicated on July 2, 1870. Of note, it was dedicated before an estimated 8,000 people, while fewer than half that many people lived in Greencastle. The project was completed by Blakley Corporation of Indianapolis.

(Note: The original dedication was July 2, 1870)
