SUMMARY:John Auten Camp No. 8\, SUVCW Chartering Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Brothers\, I am writing to invite all Brothers from all Indiana SUVCW Camps to the new John Auten Camp 8\, South Bend\, Indiana Chartering Ceremony. \n  \nThe Chartering Ceremony will take place on September 22\, 2018 at 2:00 PM ET on the steps of the “Old St. Joseph County Courthouse” in downtown South Bend. We intend after the Chartering Ceremony to process a few blocks down the street to the Old South Bend Cemetery. Here we will stop at John Auten’s grave for a rededication of his final resting place. John Auten was a member of the 9th Indiana and was one of the initial 90 day’s men. With just days remaining on his enlistment he volunteered for a scouting party and was killed by a Rebel sharpshooter. His funeral\, attended by over 5\,000 mourners\, was held in the same court house where our Chartering Ceremony is being held. \n  \nOf note\, a short distance from John Auten’s grave is that of Schuyler Colfax\, former Vice-President of the United States and Speaker of the House during President Lincoln’s terms of office. \nPlease extend our heartfelt invitation to all members of your camps to join us on this special day. If you received this invitation and are not the Camp’s Commander please be sure that your Camp Commander receives it. \n  \nThe Old Court House stands next to the current County / City building in down town South Bend\, it is on the east side of South Lafayette\, Blvd.\, the first street to the north is Washington Street\, this street runs east and west while Lafayette Blvd. is a north/south street. \n  \n  \nIn Fraternity\, Charity\, and Loyalty\, \n  \nBill Adams\, PDC \nCommander\, John Auten Camp\, 8 \nDepartment of Indiana\, SUVCW

SUMMARY:Putnam County Civil War Monument Re-dedication
DESCRIPTION:Rededication of Forest Hill Cemetery Civil War Monument\nWhen: Sun\, July 1\, 2pm – 3pm\nWhere: Forest Hill Cemetery\, 2181 South County Road 50 West\, Greencastle\, 46135\n\nPlease help celebrate the rehabilitation of the Civil War Monument at Forest Hill Cemetery\, following the efforts by our Heritage Preservation Society and President Phil Gick. The Civil War Monument at Forest Hill was the third such statue erected in Indiana and was dedicated five years after the war ended. It was the first Civil War monument in Indiana to feature a human figure. Sculpted by Thomas David Jones\, the monument was titled “Western Soldier on Guard.” It was formally dedicated on July 2\, 1870. Of note\, it was dedicated before an estimated 8\,000 people\, while fewer than half that many people lived in Greencastle. The project was completed by Blakley Corporation of Indianapolis. \n\n(Note: The original dedication was July 2\, 1870)

SUMMARY:Loyalty Day
DESCRIPTION:Loyalty Day is observed on May 1 in the United States. It is a day set aside for the reaffirmation of loyalty to the United States and for the recognition of the heritage of American freedom. \nThe holiday was first observed in 1921\, during the First Red Scare. It was originally called “Americanization Day\,“ and it was intended to replace the May 1 (“May Day”) celebration of the International Workers’ Day\, which commemorates the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago. \nDuring the Second Red Scare\, it was recognized by the U.S. Congress on April 27\, 1955\, and made an official reoccurring holiday on July 18\, 1958 (Public Law 85-529). President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed May 1\, 1955\, the first observance of Loyalty Day. In 1958\, Eisenhower urged Congress to move Child Health Day to the First Monday in October\, to avoid conflicting with Loyalty Day. Loyalty Day has been recognized with an official proclamation every year by every president since its inception as a legal holiday in 1958. \nLoyalty Day is defined as follows in 36 U.S.C. § 115: \n(a) Designation.— May 1 is Loyalty Day.\n(b) Purpose.— Loyalty Day is a special day for the reaffirmation of loyalty to the United States and for the recognition of the heritage of American freedom.\n(c) Proclamation.— The President is requested to issue a\nproclamation—(1) calling on United States Government\nofficials to display the flag of the United States on all\nGovernment buildings on Loyalty Day; and (2) inviting the\npeople of the United States to observe Loyalty Day with\nappropriate ceremonies in schools and other suitable\nplaces. SUMMARY:Sultana Disaster Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:Sultana was a Mississippi River side-wheel steamboat. On April 27\, 1865\, the boat exploded in the worst maritime disaster in United States history. She was designed with a capacity of only 376 passengers\, but she was carrying 2\,155 when three of the boat’s four boilers exploded and she burned to the waterline and sank near Memphis\, Tennessee\, killing 1\,192 passengers. This disaster was overshadowed in the press by other events\, most particularly the killing on the previous day of President Lincoln’s assassin John Wilkes Booth.\nThe wooden steamboat was constructed in 1863 by the John Litherbury Boatyard in Cincinnati\, intended for the lower Mississippi cotton trade. The steamer registered 1\,719 tons and normally carried a crew of 85. For two years\, she ran a regular route between St. Louis and New Orleans\, frequently commissioned to carry troops. \nNear 2:00 A.M. on April 27\, 1865\, when Sultana was just seven miles north of Memphis\, her boilers suddenly exploded. First one boiler exploded\, followed a split second later by two more. The cause of the explosion was too much pressure and low water in the boilers. There was reason to believe allowable working steam pressure was exceeded in an attempt to overcome the spring river current. The enormous explosion of steam came from the top\, rear of the boilers and went upward at a 45-degree angle\, tearing through the crowded decks above\, and completely demolishing the pilothouse. Without a pilot to steer the boat\, Sultana became a drifting\, floating hulk. The terrific explosion flung some of the passengers on deck into the water and destroyed a large section of the boat. The twin smokestacks toppled over\, one backwards into the blasted hole\, and one forward onto the crowded forward section of the upper deck. The forward part of the upper decks collapsed into the exposed furnace boxes\, shoving kindling into the open fire boxes which soon caught fire and turned the remaining superstructure into an inferno. Survivors of theexplosion panicked and raced for the safety of the waterbut in their weakened condition soon ran out of strengthand began to cling to each other. Whole groups wentdown together. SUMMARY:SS General Lyon Dedication (IL)
DESCRIPTION:U.S. Army Transport SSGeneral Lyon (not to be confused with the USS General Lyon\, a U.S Navy sidewheel steamer of the same era) was a screw steamer of 1026 tons built at East Haddam\, Conn. in the spring of 1864 and chartered by the Federal government in March 1864. It was used as a troop transport on the eastern seaboard\, taking part in the campaigns against Battery Wagner\, the Bermuda Hundred and Fort Fisher. \nLate in the war\, General Lyon was extensively used by the US Army to carry Federal troops from Wilmington North Carolina to Fortress Monroe\, Virginia and New York. On board when the vessel sailed from Wilmington on March 28\, 1865 were a large number of discharged Union soldiers returning from the war\, along with a number of paroled prisoners of war\, approximately 120 refugees and other civilians. \nOn March 31\, 1865\, three days into the voyage\, the ship hit rough weather off Cape Hatteras and a fire broke out in the engine room\, quickly spreading through the ship. Of the passengers on board\, approximately 500 lost their lives\, including all but five members of a 205-man contingent of the US 56th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment. There were only 29 survivors of the disaster in total\, 28 of them named in the New York Times. Isaac Wilhite of the 56th Illinois also survived. \nDedication of memorials to lost members of the 56th Illinois to be held at the Golconda\, IL courthouse.
